Being a part of AthMindset is something that aligns with who I am and who I want to be as an individual and professional. As a Black male, I have experienced and understand the stigma that comes with mental health. I can recall being an undergraduate student, pursuing a BA in Psychology and struggling with my own mental health. Many friends and professors recommended therapy, but I was against it. As I reflected as to why, I realized that I was someone who was majoring in psychology, wanted to be a counselor, but was against receiving counseling myself. It was then when I realized the magnitude that the stigma has on people who look like me. This stigma is furthered in sport because athletes are seen as super-human and unfortunately, struggling with mental health is seen as a weakness. This is a myth that I want to be able to help debunk. Being willing to be vulnerable and transparent in asking for help only adds to the super-human nature of athletes and people in general. I believe that it is essential to normalize this conversation, so that more people are aware that it is okay to not be okay. It is an honor to be a part of an organization that prioritizes and cares about the things that I prioritize and care about. I truly believe that we are better together, and all have a role to play in this fight towards ridding ourselves of the stigma of mental health.
